You get to see past the marketing
An open day at a genuinely confident retirement village is an invitation to look at everything. The show home, yes, but also the gardens, the communal spaces, the maintenance standard of homes that are already occupied. You see how the village actually functions, not how someone has arranged it for a photo.
If a village is hesitant to let you wander freely, that tells you something. If residents stop and chat without being prompted, that tells you something quite different.
