Why attending retirement village open days are worth your time

Community & Support

Researching retirement villages online will only take you so far. Websites are curated. Brochures are polished. Even video walkthroughs struggle to convey the thing that matters most: what a place actually feels like to live in. That is why open days exist, and it is why the best ones are worth attending in person.

You get to see past the marketing
An open day at a genuinely confident retirement village is an invitation to look at everything. The show home, yes, but also the gardens, the communal spaces, the maintenance standard of homes that are already occupied. You see how the village actually functions, not how someone has arranged it for a photo.

If a village is hesitant to let you wander freely, that tells you something. If residents stop and chat without being prompted, that tells you something quite different.

You can ask the questions you couldn’t Google
No website answers questions like: How do the staff know people here? What happens when something breaks? What is the atmosphere like on a rainy Tuesday? Who lives next door to the available home?
Open days give you direct access to the people who can answer these questions properly, including the residents themselves. Some of the most honest and useful information you will hear at an open day comes from a five-minute conversation with someone who moved in two years ago.

You get a feel for the community
Community is the word used in almost every piece of retirement village marketing, and with good reason. But community is not a feature you can photograph. It is something you either sense when you walk in or you do not.
At Cumberland View Retirement Village in Wheelers Hill, the open day is a chance to meet the people who actually make up this neighbourhood. Our neighbours come from all kinds of backgrounds and most of them will be happy to tell you what they have found here.

It helps you get the timing right
Many people who attend open days are not ready to move immediately, and that is fine. The value of visiting early is that it gives you a reference point. You understand what to look for, what questions to ask elsewhere, and what your priorities actually are. When the right time does come, you are not starting from scratch.

Our Winter Open Day is on Thursday 16 July
Cumberland View Retirement Village is hosting a Winter Open Day on Thursday 16 July 2026, from 11am to 3pm, at the Cumberland View Community Centre on Whalley Drive in Wheelers Hill. Come and explore the village at your own pace, meet the team, speak with current residents, and see the homes that are available. Light refreshments will be provided.

Whether you are just beginning to explore the idea or actively comparing options, this is a worthwhile. Ready to see what life at Cumberland View is really like? Register your spot for the Winter Open Day and come and meet our community in person.
