Visiting a retirement village for the first time can feel a little overwhelming. The marketing materials look polished, everyone is friendly, and it’s hard to know where to start. At Cumberland View Retirement Village in Wheelers Hill, we encourage people to come with questions, wander at their own pace, and look past the surface. Here is what actually matters.
Does it feel like somewhere people genuinely live?
The first thing to pay attention to is atmosphere, not features. When you walk in, does it feel like a real neighbourhood or does it feel like a display home? Are there personal touches in the common areas? Are people out and about? Is there a general sense that life is happening here?
A good retirement village should feel lived in. Residents who seem settled, staff who know people by name, and communal spaces that show signs of actual use are all positive signs. Perfectly staged and absolutely quiet can sometimes mean the opposite.
Talk to the people who live there
This is the single most useful thing you can do on a visit. Ask residents how long they have been there, what they enjoy most, and what surprised them after they moved in. People who are happy will generally tell you so unprompted. People who are not will often hint at it.
Do not limit your conversation to whoever the village has introduced you to. Walk around, say hello, and see what you find.
Look at the home itself, not just the presentation
When you are shown a home, think about how you would actually live in it. Is the kitchen practical? Is there enough storage? How does the natural light work at different times of day? Is the bedroom on the ground floor if that matters to you?
Also look at the maintenance standard of the homes and gardens around it. A well-maintained village is a sign of consistent management. Peeling paint or overgrown shared gardens can tell a different story.
Ask about what is included
One of the most common sources of confusion in retirement village comparisons is the fee structure. Ask clearly what your fees cover and what sits outside them. Maintenance, emergency call systems, gardens, activities, parking and rates can all be included or excluded depending on the village. Get it in writing.

Consider the location seriously
How close are the shops, your GP, your family and the things you do regularly? A beautiful village that requires a 40-minute drive for everything you need will wear thin quickly. Cumberland View is in the heart of Wheelers Hill, close to public transport, medical services, and everyday amenities.
Visit more than once if you can
A single visit on a Wednesday morning tells you one thing. A second visit on a different day, at a different time, gives you a much fuller picture. If a village genuinely suits you, it will hold up.
