It is one of the most common things people tell us after visiting Cumberland View for the first time: ‘It feels different to what I expected.’
They expected something institutional. Something arranged. They found something that felt like a neighbourhood.
That is not an accident. It is what happens when independent people, living in their own homes, choose to share a community because they actually want to.
The difference between community and proximity
Living near other people is not the same as living in community. A lot of people in retirement discover this the hard way. The suburb is full of neighbours. But the days can still stretch out quietly, without connection, without purpose, without the small spontaneous exchanges that make a place feel alive.
At Cumberland View, community is built in – not because it is forced, but because the physical environment makes it natural. The walk to the community hall takes you past other homes. The morning coffee lounge is where conversations happen. The bowling green and the croquet lawn are places where you end up talking to people you might never have met otherwise.
It is the kind of community that does not require effort to find, because it is simply part of where you live.
What 16 July will feel like
Our Winter Open Day on Thursday 16 July is designed to give you a genuine taste of that.
Come in from the cold. There will be warm soup, hot chocolate, tea and coffee ready for you. Live music from Freddy Gulino will set the atmosphere. Neighbours will be on hand to chat, honestly and without any agenda, about what life here actually looks like.
There is a locally made pop-up shop with gifts, winter essentials and homemade condiments. Guided bus tours run every 45 minutes. Lucky door prizes for everyone who comes.
But more than any of that – it is a chance to feel the place. To walk through the 34 acres of established gum trees and gardens, to see the single-level homes, to understand why so many of our neighbours say there is no place quite like Cumberland View.
Why people choose Cumberland View
The reasons people eventually choose to make their home at Cumberland View are as individual as the people themselves. Some come for the location – close to Monash Medical Centre, close to family in Melbourne’s south-east, close to the shops and services they rely on.
Some come for the homes – thoughtfully designed, single-level, beautifully maintained, and available at a range of price points. Some come for the nurse on site, or the home care team, or the quiet reassurance of knowing that support is there if they ever need it.
But most of them, when you ask them now why they are glad they came, talk about the people.
Community is not a feature you can put in a brochure. It is something you have to experience for yourself. That is what 16 July is for.
Who is welcome
This open day is for anyone who is curious – whether you live in Wheelers Hill, Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Mulgrave, Clayton, Rowville, or anywhere else across Melbourne’s south-east. Whether you are seriously looking or simply beginning to think about what retirement might look like.
It is also for families – adult children who want to understand what their parents would be moving into, and what daily life and support look like in practice.
No pressure. No obligation. Just a warm afternoon with good company.
