Staying warm and well this winter

Health & Wellness

Staying warm and well this winter is something worth thinking about now, before the cold really sets in. At Cumberland View Retirement Village in Wheelers Hill, we know that for many people this time of year brings not just colder mornings, but a quieter social calendar and less time outdoors. Getting both right, the physical warmth and the sense of connection, makes a real difference.

Why winter can feel different in retirement
When you’re no longer commuting or working to a routine, it’s easy for winter days to blur together. Without the natural structure of a working week, some people find themselves spending more time indoors, moving less, and seeing fewer people. None of that is unusual, but it is worth being aware of.

For our neighbours at Cumberland View, the village lifestyle means there are always reasons to get up and get out, even in the cooler months. Neighbours, activities, and shared spaces make it easier to stay engaged even when the weather outside is less inviting.

Staying warm at home without the worry
Heating costs are a genuine concern for many retirees on fixed incomes. A few practical habits make a big difference without sending your energy bills through the roof:

  • Layer up rather than simply turning the thermostat higher. Thermal underlayers, warm socks, and a good dressing gown do a lot of the work before the heater has to.
  • Keep moving throughout the day. Even gentle indoor movement, stretching, walking between rooms, using the stairs, helps maintain circulation and body warmth.
  • Watch for signs that a cold is becoming something more serious. Older adults are more vulnerable to chest infections and pneumonia, and it’s always better to act early. If you have an existing respiratory condition, keep your GP in the loop over winter.

Eat well to keep your energy up
Winter is actually a wonderful time to cook. Slow cookers, soups, casseroles and roasted vegetables are easy to prepare, nutritious, and warming in a way that a cold salad simply isn’t. Prioritise protein, warm fluids throughout the day, and plenty of vegetables. A cup of warm soup mid-afternoon is both comforting and genuinely nourishing.

Stay connected, even on the quiet days
Isolation is one of the less-discussed risks of winter, particularly for people who live alone. If your social calendar has shrunk since retiring, or since moving somewhere new, it’s worth being intentional about staying connected.

At Cumberland View, the village layout is designed so that neighbours are genuinely nearby. Whether it is a shared activity, a chat when checking the letterbox, or the simple reassurance of knowing familiar faces are close, community makes winter feel quite different.

Come and see it for yourself
If you’ve been thinking about what retirement living might look like, winter is actually a great time to visit. You get a real sense of how a community functions when the weather isn’t cooperating with outdoor activities.
