Last Wednesday, we hosted our monthly Morning Tea at Cumberland View Retirement Village in Wheelers Hill – and it turned into one of those mornings that reminds us exactly why we do what we do. Neighbours gathered, cups were filled, conversations flowed, and before long people were sharing stories about life, retirement, and what really makes a home feel like home.
It was a genuinely good morning.
But as the last cup was cleared and guests made their way back through the gardens, we found ourselves thinking about something else entirely.
Because for every person who walked through our gates and felt that warmth firsthand, there are others nearby who haven’t yet – and who may be navigating retirement in a way that’s quieter, and lonelier, than they ever expected.
The loneliness problem no one warns you about
Loneliness among older Australians is more common than we talk about. Not dramatic, not always obvious – but there. The quiet of a house that used to hum with activity.
The distance that grows when everyone else’s life moves at a different pace. The long stretches of time that can feel isolating rather than freeing.
It’s one of the most significant challenges people face in retirement, and one that rarely gets the attention it deserves.
The family home that made sense for decades can start to feel too big, too quiet, and too much to manage. Adult children are busy with their own lives. Friends and neighbours move on or pass away. And without the built-in social rhythm of a working week, the days can stretch in ways that catch people off guard.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
A retirement village built around independence – and connection
At Cumberland View Retirement Village, nestled on 34 acres in the heart of Wheelers Hill, the two things that matter most to people in retirement – independence and connection – aren’t in tension. They exist side by side.
This is a village where you live in your own private home, tend your own garden if you choose, come and go as you please, and answer to nobody. No forced activities, no loss of autonomy, no institutional feeling. Just a peaceful, secure setting with a warm community of neighbours around you.
Whether you’re coming from Wheelers Hill itself, Glen Waverley, Mulgrave, Rowville, Dandenong, or further across Melbourne’s south-east, Cumberland View is worth making the trip to see.
Homes designed for life as it is now
Cumberland View offers a range of single-level homes designed for comfort, ease, and low maintenance. With modern kitchens, generous living areas, your own private outdoor space, and 34 acres of established gardens on your doorstep, the kind of morning walk that feels like a genuine pleasure rather than an obligation becomes part of everyday life.
And because the team looks after garden maintenance and repairs, your time is genuinely yours.
A location that makes life easier
Wheelers Hill is one of Melbourne’s most liveable suburbs for a reason. Cumberland View neighbours have The Glen and Wheelers Hill Shopping Centres just minutes from their door – supermarkets, banks, cafes and specialty stores all close at hand.
For health needs, local GPs, pharmacies and allied health services are within easy reach, with Monash Medical Centre around seven minutes away. Bus stops near the village connect directly to Glen Waverley Station. And Jells Park is just a short trip away for those who enjoy a morning stroll among the birdlife.
It’s the kind of location where you don’t feel reliant on others to get where you need to go – and that matters.
Onsite support, without the aged care feel
What sets Cumberland View apart is the layer of quiet reassurance that comes with village life. The village nurse is available daily for health checks, wound care, and coordination with external providers. Onsite physiotherapy and podiatry appointments are available through the Village Medical Centre. Visiting GPs and allied health practitioners come directly to you.
It’s support that’s there when you need it, and invisible when you don’t.
The activities are there – but they’re never compulsory
Zumba. Line dancing. Gardening club. Book club. Monthly coffee mornings and special open days. At Cumberland View, there’s always something on – and you’re always free to join in or simply enjoy the peace and quiet of your own home.
Our morning teas have become a favourite – a relaxed, regular chance to meet new people, catch up with neighbours, and remember what it feels like to be genuinely part of something.
Which brings us to June.
Come to our next Morning Tea – 3 June
We’re hosting our next Open Morning Tea on Wednesday 3 June – and we’d love you to come along.
Maybe you’ve been quietly wondering whether village life could suit you. Maybe someone in your family has mentioned it. Maybe you’ve driven past one of our event banners on Wellington Road thought about what’s on the other side. Whatever brought you here, the answer to the question you’ve been sitting with might just be a morning tea away.
Come and see the homes, walk the gardens, meet some of the neighbours, and let us answer any questions you have. No pressure, no obligation – just a good morning with good people.
Come and see for yourself
